What is BREEAM?

Ecological planting can add to any building scheme

BREEAM is an Environmental Assessment Method and certification scheme pioneered by BRE to enable developers to minimise the environmental impact of buildings. BREEAM works by assessing the performance of buildings in nine key areas. These are :

  • Management : overall management policy, commissioning site management and procedural issues;
  • Ecology : ecological value, plus conservation and enhancement of the site;
  • Energy use : operational energy and carbon dioxide (CO2) issues;
  • Health and well-being : indoor and external issues affecting health and well-being;
  • Pollution : air and water pollution issues;
  • Transport : transport-related CO2 and location-related factors;
  • Land use : greenfield and brownfield site issues;
  • Materials : environmental implication of building materials, including life-cycle impacts;
  • Water : consumption and water efficiency.

The Role of AWTC

Since BREEAM was first developed, AWTC members have been the key provider of ecological assessment services, giving support and guidance to developers and others during the BREEAM Certification process.

In addition to BREEAM Assessments, AWTC Consultancies can also help with a wide range of ecological surveys, detailed site assessments, protected species investigations, mitigation plans, and even habitat restoration works.

AWTC members are all professionally qualified in their specialist areas, and members of professional institutes (usually IEEM or CIWEM) to ensure that clients receive the best possible support and advice.

Whether in a BREEAM Assessment or under direct contracts, our consultants will work with you to provide sustainable solutions to your ecological issues.
